I need the (UHAC) Ultra Heavy-lift Amphibious Connector (32 HQ Photos)

Posted: 15 Jul 2014 09:11 PM PDT

This is a half-scale prototype of the Ultra Heavy-lift Amphibious Connector (UHAC) Meet the Ultra Heavy-lift Amphibious Connector, or UHAC, currently being developed by the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab as a potential replacement for the Navy's current ship-to-shore hovercraft. The photo above is just a half-scale model: a full-scale version will sit some 34 feet high and 84 feet long. The secret behind this machine is foam tracks with captive air cells, which allow it to propel itself through the water at up to 20 knots, and then move onto land. Because it has a very low ground pressure footprint–about one pound per square inch–it can cross marsh land and mud flats easily. The tracks can also crawl up a sea wall up to ten feet high. And the payload of the UHAC is huge: about three times that of the Marines' current ship-to-shore craft, the Landing Craft Air Cushion. Source

Only the best to family and friends of fallen Melvin Santiago (15 Photos)

Posted: 15 Jul 2014 09:08 PM PDT

Melvin Santiago had dreamed of being a police officer since he was a boy, seeking to follow in his uncle's footsteps.                    When Santiago accomplished his dream last December and joined the Jersey City force as a rookie officer, he asked to serve in the city's toughest district. Seven months after he graduated from the academy, the 23-year-old was killed in the line of duty when a gunman shot him in the head. The uncle who inspired Santiago to become a cop said in a statement that Santiago was a role model and mentor to his younger brother and cousins. "It is a tragic situation when any officer is killed in the line of duty," Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said. "Melvin was an officer who represented everything one would want to see in a police officer. I know the entire city's thoughts and prayers are with the Santiago family during this difficult time and we mourn together." Source 1 Source 2
