Medal of Honor recipient William Kyle Carpenter (13 Photos)

Posted: 22 Jun 2014 09:17 PM PDT

President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor on Thursday to Marine Cpl. William Kyle Carpenter, celebrating the veteran's heroism and the modern medical miracle it took to keep him alive after he was rocked with a grenade blast while attempting to shield a fellow Marine from harm. Carpenter, 24, received the award in a ceremony in the East Room of the White House, flanked by his family and dozens of Marines from his unit. He is credited with deliberately lunging at a hand grenade after an insurgent tossed it at him and another Marine, Lance Cpl. Nick Eufrazio, while they manned a rooftop security post in a small, dusty compound in Marjah, Afghanistan. Carpenter still bears the scars of that Nov. 21, 2010, incident, but has made a remarkable recovery. He has run a marathon, sky-dived and completed a mud-run competition since being injured, the president noted, and pushed through physical therapy and surgeries to retire medically and attend the University of South Carolina.

Posted: 22 Jun 2014 09:08 PM PDT

Saker Falcon is a multinational training exercise involving roughly 200 Soldiers from U.S. Army Europe's 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, two Dutch Air Assault battalions, and Hungarian military forces. The objectives of the training include enhancing joint combined interoperability with allied and partner nations and preparing participants to operate in a joint, multinational, integrated environment with support from Hungarian governmental agencies. Saker Falcon, underway from April 3 through April 17, reinforces U.S. Army Europe's strategic objectives to increase regional flexibility, preserve and enhance NATO interoperability, and facilitate multinational training. All photos were shot by me or a Dutch photographer that was on ground with me there. Check out more photos here

DIY wrist crossbow with laser targetting (13 Photos)

It even has a laser sight, which is powered by two AA-batteries which are tucked on his palm along with the laser sight's toggle. The wristbow's bolts are made of carbon fiber tubing with brass and steel tips, although crossbow connoisseurs might balk at his bolts because they have fletching - the feathery things near the back of the arrow - which bolts are not supposed to have.

Video game World of Warplanes sponsors RAF exhibit of recovered Dornier Do17 bomber (23 Photos)

Posted: 22 Jun 2014 09:06 PM PDT

Wargaming today announced that the Dornier Do17 aircraft will be exhibited at the Royal Air Force Museum in London, United Kingdom upon completion of its restoration in 2015. In 2013, Wargaming and the Royal Air Force Museum set out to retrieve and conserve the only known surviving Dornier Do17 aircraft and provide visitors with the opportunity to view the conservation process and learn more about its history and role throughout World War II. The exhibit currently features restored pieces of the plane that can be physically interacted by the general public, with teams of volunteers working on their restoration. Upon its completion next year, the Dornier Do17 aircraft will be shipped from the RAF conservation workshop in Cosford, UK and featured in the Wargaming.net Interpretation Zone of the Museum in London. To celebrate the opening of the Wargaming.net Interpretation Zone on February 28, 2014 Wargaming and the RAF Museum launched a mobile application, Apparition, using augmented reality to view a virtual version of the aircraft flying over the museum. Users were encouraged to submit photos of the hundreds of virtual Do17's placed in various locations around the world, and the top 15 photos from Australia, UK, Ukraine, Philippines, Mexico and the USA were chosen to be on display at the exhibit.
