User submit: Marines training with Japanese Ground Self Defense Force (27 Photos)

"So a quick recap of what we did.  We are currently forward deployed to Japan.  From our Camp in which we are stationed, the Battalion sends out companies to different places in the pacific.  Since Afghanistan is dying down the Marine Corps wants our infantry units to go train  forces in the Pacific, that are allies with us.  This does two things; 1.) Trains those nations so they can become better. 2.)  It gives us a sense of familiarization with these forces.  So if we ever did have to fight along side them we would know what to expect.  So our mission was to do cold weather training with the Japanese.  This was a great experience for all the Marines involved.  The first few days we showed them some of our weapon systems and how we employ them.  We taught some classes to the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF) just so they could learn some of our tactics.  The final exercise was a 2 day event.  It was a Marine company and a JGSDF company clearing ground alongside each other.  The final part of the exercise was an attack on the last objective.  This was suppose to be 2 JGSDF platoons conducting the attack, but based on the simulation gear, a Marine platoon and JGSDF platoon had to conduct the attack together.  This was a great experience for both sides.  We got to work hand and hand at the smallest unit possible clearing the objective areas.  There were some language barriers but we were able to overcome them.  The place that this whole thing was conducted is called "Snow Country" it was crazy.  You would walk a few feet and then fall into the snow up to your waist even stomach at some points.  And to top it off the final exercise was held during the worst blizzard they have had in a decade.  After all of the exercises we had a few nights where we could drink with each other.  These guys were a blast to drink with.  They would get the guitar out and play some music sing songs, get drunk and start dancing.  Some of the Japanese would proclaim that they were the shotgunning champions of the Japan and they were pretty good.  We got to relax and hang out with them and really get to know them.  We learned that they were really cool dudes to hang with and some tough dudes to fight alongside."
