User submit: Awesome high-res AH-1W Cobras and UH-N Hueys from 24th MEU (48 Photos)

Posted: 05 May 2013 09:13 PM PDT

"My name is Brandon Murphy and I'm a Corporal in the USMC. I took these pictures on my recent deployment from last year while I was part of the 24th MEU(Marine Expeditionary Unit), VMM-261(REIN). These pictures were taken aboard the USS New York on her maiden voyage, I fix the AH-1W and UH-1N in the Marine Corps. We were on the New York when these pictures were taken early on in our Deployment. To explain a MEU simply, we float around with the Navy as the Nation's Force in Readiness all around the globe. We ourselves are Helicopter Mechanics/Crew Chiefs, specifically for the AH-1W (Cobra) and UH-1N (Huey). It was a long 9 months at sea seeing the world (Jordan, Bahrain, Italy, Spain, Kuwait and Morocco just to name a few) but thanks to you Chive we Kept Calm, and Chived On. KCCO from the Marines and Sailors of the 24th MEU!"

USS Alabama (BB-60), a South Dakota-class battleship, was the sixth completed ship of the United States Navy named for the U.S. state of Alabama, however she was only the third commissioned ship with that name. Alabama was commissioned in 1942 and served in World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. She was decommissioned in 1947 and assigned to the reserve duty. She was retired in 1962. In 1964, Alabama was taken to Mobile Bay and opened as a museum ship the following year. The ship was added to the National Historic Landmark registry in 1986. Source
