User submit: USS Pinckney’s VBSS team give Somalian pirates a “visit” (32 Photos)

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 09:06 PM PDT

"This is the USS Pinckney VBSS (Visit, Board, Search and Seizure) team for Westpac deployment 2009-2010.  Our biggest mission was going into a pirate camp off the coast of Somalia and rescuing the Ariana.  The Ariana and her crew had been held captive for 7 months at which point the shipping company paid a ransom to have the ship and crew released.  When pirates failed to vacate the ship we went in and forced them to leave.  It took us roughly two weeks to get the Ariana sea worthy by flying fuel, oil and supplies over in 50 gallon drums from sunrise to sunset every day.  During our stay all pirate activity ceased.  They even moved several other captive ships further down the coast away from the Ariana.  Our VBSS team provided security while engineers and other specialists from the USS Pinckney provided the technical expertise to get the Ariana underway and her crew home to safety.      There are pictures of the conditions when we first arrived.  The ship was ransacked and covered in cot, the green leaves which were chewed by Somali similar to tobacco, but with a much stronger effect.  The crew were kept in one room except for three engineers who stayed below decks and only had the condensation on the walls to use as drinking / bathing water.  The crew were in very poor health when we arrived."
