French bomber from the past: Dassault Mirage IIIV/IV (41 HQ Photos)

Posted: 23 Jun 2014 09:10 PM PDT

The Dassault Mirage IIIV was a French vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) prototype fighter aircraft of the mid-1960s. The Mirage IIIV model followed the Dassault Mirage III and featured eight small vertical lift jets straddling the main engine. The design was in response to a NATO specification for a VTOL strike fighter. One of the two aircraft built was destroyed in an accident and the project was abandoned; the surviving aircraft is on public display. The Dassault Mirage IV was a French jet-propelled supersonic strategic bomber and deep-reconnaissance aircraft. Developed by Dassault Aviation, the aircraft entered service with the French Air Force in October 1964. For many years it was a vital part of the nuclear triad of the Force de Frappe, France's nuclear deterrent striking force. The Mirage IV was retired from the nuclear strike role in 1996, and the type was entirely retired from operational service in 2005.

Posted: 23 Jun 2014 09:05 PM PDT

I'm a Los Angeles-based photographer and recently made a trip to the three most baddest-assed sea-going vessels in the greater Los Angeles County, the Battleship Iowa (BB-61): The Battleship of Presidents which had conversions made for the partially-paralyzed Franklin Delano Roosevelt. (a plus-sized bathtub and his own elevator were installed for his stay aboard)The Scorpion B-427 Soviet Submarine: Docked next to the Queen Mary is this Foxtrot-Class Cold War-Era Sub that was built in Leningrad and operated in the Russian Pacific Fleet until it's decommission in 1994.The RMS Queen Mary: Built in Scotland and sailing from Liverpool, The Queen Mary turned allied troopship and was renamed The Grey Ghost, ferrying soldiers for the length of World War II.The full gallery can be seen at my website. for taking the time, guys. All of your work with donations and fellow Chivers are selfless, much appreciated, and inspiring.Leo Quijano Check out more of Leo Quijano's photos here
