User submit: remembering fallen Police Officer Robert “Robbie” German (story)

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 09:12 PM PDT

During the early morning hours of March 22, Windermere, Flordia Police Officer, Robert "Robbie" German was shot and killed in the line of duty.   He was 31 and served on the department for five years. Officer German responded to a suspicious persons called. Shortly after arriving on scene alone Officer German called for backup.  Responding Officers arrived on scene to find Officer German suffering from a gunshot to the head.  He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.   The two suspects involved were found dead a short distance from what appeared to be a muder sucidie. It was later determined the two teens ran away from home a week earlier, left sucidie notes and fled from Officers in a nearby jurisdiction. What most do not know is Officer German was injured on duty just six months prior and suffered a shoulder injury following an incident with a Autistic Adult.  At the time of that incident it was unknown to Officer German that the person was autistic.  Sensing something was not right, Officer German successfully diffused the situation though injuring himself.  Still, Officer German's only concern was for the autistic person.  Because of the incident Officer German lead his department in training specializing confronting someone with special needs.  Also, Officer German had the pleasure of reuniting with the autistic person and his parents and all shared laughs with one another.  Because he so missed policing the community, Officer German obtain approval from his doctor to return to duty before his original return date of April 1.  Then on the night of the incident the oncoming watch was short and Officer German volunteered to stay over. During his memorial service the Pastor asked the question, "Why".  Little did we know that question of "why" would quickly be answered.  In addition to the hundreds of Law Enforcement Officers being present at the service there were hundreds of members from the community lining the streets.  It because of the communities support I understood the question of "why".  To see so many people standing there crying,  signs with hopeful saying, etc made it clear this was why Officer German did what he did. Officer Robert "Robbie" German is a HERO!  Had he not of confronted the suspects that night and taken that bullet who knows who else would of been killed. PLEASE honor Officer German on the Chive
